Spring has sprung, and everyone’s feeling frisky

As they say in the classics, spring has sprung. The days are warming up, the nights are still cool, and the birds have created their unique morning orchestra of trills and warbles.

We are seeing plenty of wildlife at the moment, particularly early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Wallabies are hanging around the river, the birdlife is building nests and wooing new partners, and the platypus are putting on a show.

Last weekend Bernie and I were being interviewed by Austrack Campers, a caravan company that held its annual Queensland muster here, and the interviewers asked about campsite highlights. After I rattled off a bunch of great things, the cameraman jumped in with, ‘But what about all the wildlife!’ Ah yep, soz, we take that for granted sometimes.

What else do we love? Well, bushwalking in the morning and late afternoon. Last time I trundled up to the Cave, I nearly tripped over a busy little echidna.

And following trails is about to get a whole lot easier! I made a cash splash on Amazon and bought a bundle of trail markers that are slowly making their way out of Bernie’s buggy and onto trailside trees. I’ll make a big deal of it on socials when the last marker goes up.

The stars have also been particularly good lately. One of the advantages of being tucked away in the gorge is that there is very little light pollution, so on a clear night the sky really puts on a show. What is better than sipping on your bevvy of choice, warmed by the campfire and stargazing? I use the Night Sky app; it’s a cool way to explore the world above us.

And because our campsites are spread out along the Condamine River, you and your family and friends can spot Taurus and Aries in peace and quiet.

While there’s plenty happening in spring, you can choose to dial up the activities or just wind down. Sometimes sitting beside the river and seeing what turns up is more than enough.
